Arsenal are planning to sign Chelsea striker Fernando Torres and hope that the Spaniard will link up with Gonzalo Higuain to form the Gunners new-look striking partnership, Mirror reports.
The news comes as reports suggest that Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is ready to let Torres leave the club this summer as he looks to overhaul the Blues squad.
The Gunners are attempting to tie up a deal for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain and have also reportedly lodged a £20million bid with Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.
But if boss Arsene Wenger fails to land those targets, The Sunday People reports that the Frenchman will turn his attentions to Torres, who, despite rediscovering some kind of form last term with 23 goals, is not in new Blues boss Jose Mourinho’s plans.
In fact, the People even goes as far as to claim that Mourinho considers just five of the squad he inherited from Rafa Benitez as certain starters for next season – Peetr Cech, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Eden Hazard and Oscar.
Arsenal will now move for Torres with the Gunners board desperate for big name signings that will persuade manager Arsene Wenger to sign a new contract at the Emirates.
Torres is set to hold talks with Mourinho when he returns from the Confederations Cup in Brazil and the striker already has a feeling that the Portuguese manager will tell him that he no longer has a future at the club.
Wenger has been given a transfer war-chest to bolster the squad and top names are expected to arrive at the club this season but a move for Torres to the North London club seems highly unlikely.
Further, when was the last time Wenger played two strikers together? Both Higuain and Torres are out-an-out centre forwards and Wenger hasn’t used that system for a long time now. It is also improbable to think that the Frenchman would allow such system to take shape at the expense of his favoured formations at the club.
However, whilst no fee for the transfer is mentioned, the article does infer that Torres wishes to see if he is in Mourinho’s plans before he makes any decisions on his future.
Is this a deal that could go through or is it all tabloid rubbish?
We can get just as much if not more production from a Sophomore Giroud than we could possibly get from a washed out Torres. Please don't make this move Wenger.
