So what happened to all that guff about Arsenal being ready to spend big and something about a £70 million warchest at the Emirates?
The Mirror have splashed the backpage of their Thursday offering by claiming that Marouane Fellaini wants to trade Everton for Arsenal this summer however the move is still in the balance as Arsene Wenger mulls over the Belgian’s £23 million price tag which is needed to activate his release clause.
Journalist David Maddock, in an article that significantly lacks any quotes, wrote:
Wenger is unconvinced that £23m for Fellaini represents good value, and so far has not been prepared to commit to a bid that will trigger his release clause.
There is bemusement at Everton about the north Londoners’ apparent desire to undercut that release clause and attempt to get Fellaini for less than the stated £23m.
The Mirror’s article – whether true or not – will anger Arsenal fans desperate to see their side return to it’s former glories. Why doesn’t Wenger just spend the money?!
Consensus opinion would surely by positive should Arsenal manage to sign Fellaini this summer, however the narrative that Wenger is miserly thumbing over the pounds involved in the deal suggest that another top target could slip through the Gunners hands.
Video highlights of Marouane Fellaini during the 2012-13 season can be seen below.
I think the club would like to keep their reputation for spending wisely.Even if he had scored 100 goals in a season it is not necessarily a good reason. Maybe value is at stake here. There is far too much greed in the game already without ratcheting it up further
